Charity Projects

Current Funding Needs

All these projects have been funded by private donors whose funding is coming to an end in March 2011. We need £200 a month to sustain these projects. Ocean Stars is hoping to find donors who may wish to give £10 a month or more so that these projects can continue. Please contact us if you feel you are able to help us.

Ocean Stars also currently run 4 sponsorship programmes. These sponsorship programmes mean that each child involved has money for clothing, transport to school, books and any other resources they need. It costs £10 a month to sponsor a child, please follow this link for more information.

Mandoor

Mandoor

In Mandoor, known for its green leaves (Keerai) its one Hindu temple, the village people have not had much access to education. Before 2007 the village was under LTTE control. The village can only be accessed by crossing a lagoon with a ferry and the people of the village are poor. The main road is in a very bad condition and getting about is difficult. The houses are made of mud and coconut leaves. Access to hospitals, good schools and transport is poor. 40 children benefit from the lunch project here. This project has been running for just over a year now and the teachers have seen a great difference in the children’s demeanour and health since it started.

Thuraineelawanai

Thuraineelawanai

This playgroup serves a very isolated community consisting of 53 Hindu families. Area floods regularly so access by road is limited to wading across the lagoon. The community is very poor, people are employed as fishermen, odd jobs etc. Children don’t often eat before coming to school so a drink and small snack are supplied. There are 16 children in this play group. In 2009 a lunch project was started for this playgroup sponsored by Hartley Witney Methodist Church. The parents take it in turns to prepare the lunch for the children.

Urani

Urani

This playgroup has 45 children and two teachers whose wages are paid by Ocean Stars. This nursery serves a very poor community so Ocean Stars has been running a lunch project since January 2006 to provide the children with one hot nutritious meal a day. The teachers have noticed that since the lunch project has started the children’s general health has also improved. They have colds and coughs less often and have more energy. Ocean Stars pays for a cook to prepare the meals for the children.
